Entrepreneurship reveals itself in many different ways.
I ran into an enthusiastic young man over the weekend who had great delight in sharing his story of his newly established lawn mowing business. A plumber during the usual working week, this person, driven from a desire to create additional income for him and his family, had decided to setup a lawn mowing business. That in itself is hardly out of the ordinary, however his approach to growing the business was the bit that intrigued me.
He had discovered that once he had one customer in a street, it was relatively easy to get another, and the whole thing snowballed from there. It seemed that doing good work, which was clearly on display, at a price that was competitive, attracted other customers! One became two, two become four and so on. He also had identified additional value that he could add, that others did not, that made a difference to the quality of the finished job and perceptually added a lot of value to the customers view on the value that they had received.
I say perceptually, as after all its the perception of the customer that’s more important – your reality of what you offer, may not be important or indeed it may not differentiate you in the eyes of the customer.
His enthusiasm and passion for what he did was clear, and even in something as simple as mowing lawns, this will be seen by the customer. Passion is infectious and contagious!
What can you do in your business, that not only adds additional value to your customer, but also more importantly reinforces why they continue to do business with you?
